Apply pressure with a pillow

Applying pressure with a pillow can help children feel more calm, organized, and regulated by giving their body deep pressure input, also called proprioceptive input. This type of input comes from pressure on the muscles and joints and can help the nervous system feel safe and grounded. Many children benefit from pillow squeezes, gentle pushes, or lying under a pillow because it may decrease overstimulation, improve body awareness, support attention, and help with transitions or calming after excitement. Parents can use pillows in playful ways such as “sandwich squeezes,” pushing against a pillow on the wall, or resting a pillow across the child’s lap during quiet activities. Always watch the child’s comfort level and use gentle, supervised pressure that the child enjoys and responds to positively.

Pop some bubbles!!

Blowing and popping bubbles is a fun way to build important skills used in both occupational therapy (OT) and speech therapy. In OT, bubbles help children strengthen hand-eye coordination, visual tracking, finger isolation, balance, and core strength as they reach, point, pop, and move their bodies to chase bubbles. Blowing bubbles also encourages deep breathing and oral motor control. In speech therapy, bubbles are motivating for practicing requesting (“more bubbles”), turn-taking, imitation, eye contact, following directions, and early sounds and words. Parents can support learning by modeling simple words, encouraging their child to use fingers instead of whole hands to pop bubbles, and adding movement games like jumping or reaching for high and low bubbles. Most importantly, keep it playful and positive so your child stays engaged while building skills naturally through play.
